Am I Too Old To Foster?

Thinking about fostering but worried you might be too old? Discover why age isn't necessarily a barrier to becoming a foster carer and how your life experience could make a real difference to a child.

“Am I too old to become a foster carer?”

It’s a question we hear more often than you might think. Perhaps you’ve always considered fostering but felt that the opportunity had passed you by. Maybe your children have grown up, you’re approaching retirement, or you simply wonder whether you have the energy to take on the responsibility of caring for a child or young person.

The good news is that there is no upper age limit for fostering in the UK.

What matters isn’t your age — it’s the experience, stability, patience, commitment and care you can offer a child.

Experience really does matter

One of the greatest strengths that older foster carers can bring is life experience.

Over the years, you may have developed valuable skills through raising your own children, working, caring for family members, supporting others or simply navigating the ups and downs of life.

Children and young people in foster care can benefit enormously from having a consistent adult in their lives who is able to listen, understand and provide reassurance.

Is there such a thing as being “too old”?

There isn’t a simple age at which someone becomes too old to foster.

Every prospective foster carer is considered as an individual. Your health, lifestyle, support network, home environment, experience and ability to meet the needs of a child will all be considered.

Ultimately, fostering is about what you can offer a child — not simply the number on your birth certificate.

Could fostering be right for you?

If you’ve ever thought:

A conversation with a fostering agency can simply be the first step towards finding out more. There is no obligation to continue, and you’ll have the opportunity to ask questions, discuss your circumstances and understand what fostering would involve.

Your experience could be exactly what a child needs.
